Branding the slow news revolution
News has become noise – we are all overwhelmed by information. With its motto ‘slow down, wise up’, Tortoise is a newsroom offering a more reflective alternative to the established media. Initially, branding was needed to launch a crowdfunding campaign, and it became the biggest ever journalism project on Kickstarter.
From workshops with the Tortoise founders, we had identified a space for the brand to own. It was vital for Tortoise to feel approachable and honest, but at the same time be a credible and highly critical voice.
To chime with its discerning target audience, the design needed to be intelligent and capitalise on the characterful name. Our solution included a restrained, playful logotype, a distinctive colour palette, and typography suited to digital and print. It gave Tortoise the tools to establish a new voice in news.
