Brief: Design & art direct a new quarterly magazine exclusively for Times+ members. The content of the magazine will be focussed on giving members an exclusive insight to the news gathering process – and history of it – at The Times and The Sunday Times newspapers. The magazine should look and feel, bold, warm, fresh and different to the usual communication expected by members but retain a sense of Times style. Decide the format, manage and source print and paper for 265,000 copies. Commission any illustration and photography with an allocated art budget.
Response: We started by working with a printer to devise a format and source a high quality tactile paper. Both were decided upon to be suitable to our budget and to retain the highest possible quality of print production for the scale of the run. We then settled on a typographic palette within Times style that was different to their other publications, yet still retaining elegance and personality. We commissioned witty illustration to add pace and variation, and a cover portrait to add to the exclusivity, rather than using existing Times imagery.
